A Great Reply for “So…What’s New with You?”
It’s easy to undervalue our interests. We think we have to master a skill, have actual talent, in order to own it. That if we’re dabbling, playing with something — for fun! — our interest is not yet ready to be declared.
So here’s another creativity exercise for us to keep the plasticity in our brains and the
endorphins flooding our systems. And to help us step more fully into ourselves. It comes from Pam Grout’s Art & Soul, Reloaded.
Design an elevator pitch for a creative project.
You might recall that an elevator pitch is a brief description that is meant to capture interest. It’s kind of a, “Hey, this is what I’ve got going on and I’m really excited by that.”
Personally, I get challenged by “brief.” That’s okay – this is about the creative exercise, not points for finishing properly. Just have fun with it, and see where it leads you.
Let’s begin: Think of a creative project you’re currently playing with, or one that you might want to play with one day.
Think you’re not creative? You are. If it helps, go ahead and take this short creativity test.
You are a creative person by default. Honestly. It comes with being human. You just might need a little guidance to see it that way, so here’s some help:
Do you have a pile of recipes you haven’t yet tried? How about a Pinterest board of any kind? Are you considering repainting your living room? Do you have a pet or other living being that you physically care for? Do you notice holiday decorations? Are you downsizing (or upsizing) your home? Have you ever forwarded emails with cartoons, memes, and other Ahas to your friends and family? Do you like music? Movies? Clothing? What do you collect and/or gather? Do you like photographs? What do you have on your walls? What do you do for exercise and/or movement? For prayer and/or meditation?
Creativity is not only your output; it’s also where you go for input.
With your creative project in mind, now play with that elevator pitch. Just think of how much fun you’ll have when someone asks you, “So…what’s new?”
Here’s some of my creative play with this:
I’m preparing for our bathroom remodel, and am learning about the pros and cons of
different shower door styles.
I found a starter kit on Amazon, and am teaching myself to play the violin as a Christmas present.
I brew kombucha, and have recently started coconut milk kefir.
I make homemade dog food for my German Shepherd.
I made venison jerky in the oven for the first time.
I write weekly about transforming ourselves through ease and joy.
Now over to you: what’s something you’ve been up to, or thinking about being up to? I’m already excited to read these in the comments, below!
